DIGITAL VIDEO, 4'18" (VIDEO STILL, DETAIL)
If 70s glam rock iconography and a harsh sarcasm (i.e. anti-Hallmark, anti-pop symbols, anti-Damian Hurst) bites yer apple, then perhaps Vanila Netto's exhibition of video works, wall based paintings and photography is worth a taste.
As a young thing, Brazillian Miss Vanila fell in dirty love with the band KISS, a precise and ‘impactual' moment she vividly recalls. The beastly goth-glamers professed a vivacious freedom that was de-closeted by their masks. Cliché pop symbols (think the skull, snow dome, kiss masks) stand as totems throughout this show, as well as found items rebuilt/re-photographed to emanate our prescriptive times and relationships.
Unafraid of redundancy and rejection, like her aforementioned aficionados, Vanila's good-natured vandalism ensures theatrical refreshment and an interesting perusal through the varied media.
