Soft Glue is a two person exhibition that highlights the artists' awareness of form through matter. As is the general case in art; unique material exploration allows for serendipitous work to be created. In this particular instance, such exploration comes through gathering, assembling, construction, destruction and depiction - but not necessarily in that order.
One of Charlie Sofo's previous pieces, 'Library Hairs' (2008), is a work on paper presenting two dimensional geometric forms. Made from strands of hair that were found inside library books, the piece accesses personal experience - both Sofo's own and borrowers before him. It is with such heightened tactility that he provides a solid testimony to the library's power of information and interaction.
MacDougall's studies of portraiture present a different view of form. Painting on an interesting and rarely used medium, glass, she offers a new layer to the idea of portrait. As light transmits straight through glass, the audience is not only given the opportunity to look at the painting, but also to look through it or even catch a reflection.
Perhaps it's the constructive character of the show that gives it its title, or maybe it's the underlying, destructive inclination. Regardless, glue is the solution.
