Seriously, this exhibition is a joke. Less than a month ago Thomas Jeppe was exhibiting his solo show, THE HEIGHT OF ELEGANCE, at Utopian Slumps in Melbourne and already he has completed an entirely new body of work, TAKE THE EDGE OFF, opening this Friday at Black & Blue.

Some critics might suggest that the short time frame indicates some kind of artistic compromise, but that would be ignoring the spontaneity that Jeppe has made a definitive part of his practice; evident in his photography and home made tattoos.

Best defined as an extended response rather than an opposite reaction, TAKE THE EDGE OFF indulges Jeppe's long-running linguistic and aesthetic interest in gags and puns as a way of balancing the personal, visual and thematic demands of his previous show.

Acutely aware of the circular nature of jokes, Jeppe's work has anything but a ba-boom-tish, one-liner effect. Instead, through repetition and diversions of text and image, we become immersed and intrigued by the cross-wiring and short-circuiting of ideas: prompting an exploration of subtleties disguised by bold forms that urge us to find the ‘wise' between the ‘cracks'.
