With all that air kissing, quaffing of white wine and gushing about rectilinear forms, art gigs tend to be a terribly faggy affair by nature. And a new exhibition featuring works from Melbourne-based mag THEY SHOOT HOMOS DON'T THEY? (TSHDT), promises to be no exception.
As an art journal, TSHDT is like a hairy middle finger elegantly extended towards the norm. Specifically established to challenge the convergence of homo culture and mediocrity, the publication showcases creative (and not necessarily gay) men and asks them: ‘what kind of world are you creating?'
With contributions from the likes of Kenneth Anger, Bruce LaBruce and Marc Bauer the results are often confronting (so little man, so many pubes) but always compelling.
This exhibition, titled THE BROTHERHOOD, seeks to connect gay artists across time and space. Prepare yourself for a mash of cheeky and sordid works: some as passive as chocolate skin on white sheets, some as aggressive as black body bags on a metallic floor. Best of all, you don't even need a gay heart to appreciate the intense emotion in each one.
