Before the organic insurgence, the Pad Thai revolution or the Market empire, Glebe Point Road just had Badde Manors.
Perched Doctor Seuss-style on a lopsided corner and totally vegetarian, the tea-room institution has been serving coffee, tea cake and crispy sweetcorn for longer than any one who goes there can remember.
The café's reputation has fluctuated over the years, "If your thing is being served by tattooed and dreadlocked ferals with attitude, then you'll love this place" reports one blog site. But like a cranky aunt who can bake a fine ANZAC, locals accept that the frequently cold shoulder with their café latte is worth it when the cakes are sourced from eight different pastry chefs and the gelato gives Gelatissimo a run for its money (try the Belgian chocolate). Even the staff can't argue with that.
