Stop staring at the cover and listen. In Berlin in January this year I was lucky enough to be there at the same time that Mike Mills was opening The Only Way Out Is Through at Pool Gallery. I arrived there at 6pm, Standard-Melbourne-Gallery-Opening-Time (SMGOT), to find them putting the finishing touches on the show. He was standing out the front taking it all in. I should have kept on walking. I should have sat at the bar across the street and just waited until other less-eager people showed up. Instead, I asked him if he knew what time the show opened. Of course he did, it was his show. "Seven, I think." he told me kindly. "Thanks." I said and walked off.

Man, I completely blew it, and even though he is famous for his depressed optimism, no one was more depressed than I was at that moment. I guess this is what a sorta-celebrity man-crush will do to you: make you ask stupid questions just to get closer to your humble hero, just to have the chance to talk.

Fortunately, in the most recent issue of Berlin's 032c magazine, they have published an interview with Mike Mills far superior to my chat that never was. Traversing depression, recession, privilege, Japan, independent film, Eames, E.T., Winnie the Pooh, Humans, Sister Corita Kent, and with photography by Todd Cole, Nick Currie's interview reads like a song. There is other content too: Publisher Gerhard Steidl, ___fabrics interseason and a "photoshoot" (aka tax-deductible porn) with Agyness Deyn.
