Fire, flood, and famine, Neil Strauss fears not; instead, he fears the societal collapse that may trigger each of these events. His previous novels chronicled the lives of rock musicians and porn stars. Then, he seduced women and charmed readers with NEW YORK TIMES best seller: THE GAME - an exposé on pickup artists. In this, his ninth novel, Strauss opts for a vastly removed subject matter: survivalism.
After beginning to look at the world through "apocalypse eyes" post-9/11, Strauss narrates his efforts to obtain a second passport for a remote Caribbean nation, build a network of like-minded escapists, and learn the skills necessary to live off the land. His thrilling prose describes the shift in personal values that finds him abandoning hope - which he soon dismisses as a passive, useless emotion - and embracing action, through expert training in urban evasion, firearms, lock-picking, outdoor survival and ultimately, cultural escapism.
Several dozen 'lessons' comprise the book's chapters, which are regularly interrupted by stylised comics depicting chaotic scenarios and appropriate survival guides. In sum, Strauss' honed journalistic style cleverly navigates a potentially irrational, reactionary topic by regular injections of wit, reason and reality. Recommended.
