READ covers fiction, fanzines, zines with no fans except for us, websites, blogs, magazines, artist's books and other independent releases. Chances are, if it's been published then we know about it and chances are, if it's not in TwoThousand, then we didn't like it. READ is for people who were born with ink in their veins and a fat balding critic on their shoulder. READ has also created more best-sellers than Oprah's Book Club and more wannabe to be writers than Hunter S Thompson.
Providing clean air, shelter, shade, fruit, flowers, and sometimes even cashews; trees are pretty damn stupid. Take a look at your average tree and tell me it doesn't remind you of an anorexic in a green afro-wig. Am I right? Fuckin' trees. What'd they know? Sweet F.A. is what. And that's why we should resume chopping the big weird bastards down to make more books.
I like this blog for a few reasons. First, one of its creators is Cry Bloxsome who is amazing. Secondly, while they encourage contributions, they're not afraid to be picky, which keeps things tight, and they draw the line at poetry, which keeps things enjoyable. Thirdly, they have a manifesto that reads like they wrote it when they were drunk and angry and overwhelmed with ego, then tidied it up a bit the next morning.
It's true, producing a city guide has a lot of perks. Complimentary tickets, free CDs, drugs, R.S.I., drugs for R.S.I. But undeniably the best perk of the job is the amazing people that we get to meet. People who don't view the world in terms of ‘life' or ‘work' but simply continue to create because they love what they do.
The internet is a thousand miles wide and one inch deep. I'm not sure where I read that - somewhere online I guess. This Long Century approaches the levelling of the information playing field in a lateral, intelligent manner, providing authoritative content while encouraging further investigation.
What David Lynch showed us with Blue Velvet was how beneath the ordinary, every day life... there's some creepy shit going on. What we try and show each week with TwoThousand is how beneath the ordinary, every day life, there's some awesome shit going on.
Ordinary Magazine shows us that there's a fine line between creepy and awesome.
For me, it started in the winter of 2006 when I stumbled upon KBD Records - a blog dedicated to sharing rare punk records, lyrics and the stories behind them. Before then, all I knew about punk was that I liked it. I only owned the usual boring stuff like Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash and The Voidoids.
Who actually keeps a festival program for the whole festival? Personally, I've already lost two of the Sydney Design 09 Festival ones and three of the State Of Design guides and they haven't even started yet. Besides, if you don't spill wine on yours at the launch then you're not really our type of person.
