There's something about Oslo - something very, very strange. These three little books, collections of work printed on subtly varying paper stocks, are like peering through a semi-transparent shower screen into his unique mind.
Someone said that the root of all comedy lies in a kind of superfluous rigidity, in the comedic subject not realising or not acknowledging that a given situation has changed, and so acting in a way that, while only a moment ago was appropriate, is now inappropriate.
This theorem can be applied broadly with surprising success, it seems to be the source of much of the comedy we find in documentaries, where the subjects of the camera's focus carry on as if the camera wasn't there, but the situation is drastically different simply because the camera is there.
The genius of Oslo's work is in specifically identifying, witnessing and documenting this kind of situation, through which - with a kind of journalistic, straight man attitude - they become poignant, absurd and utterly mesmerising in their observations of our awkwardness.
