Despite the propaganda and sloganeering inherent with any government or council initiative of this type, SUSTAINABLE SYDNEY 2030 is a project worth having a look at - and the website is a good place to start.
Yes, we all want the new alcohol and licensing laws to happen, but when it comes to long-term urban vision and change there are bigger issues to consider. Up until recently, Sydney town planning has been nothing short of a disgrace. Most of it (in recent years) was literally out-sourced to developers. It is only now that we are seeing impetus towards creating a cleaner, greener, people-friendly city. This includes sustainability targets for greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, a revamped public transport system and efforts to make Sydney more bike friendly (god knows it ain't now).
It also touches on updated social infrastructure (focusing on distinct village centers within walking distance of all city residents) and plans to create an interconnecting network of 'green streets' that criss-cross the CBD.
As the project is fairly new (it was announced in late 2006), it's still a while off implementation. However, there is an active program of talks being held at various venues around the city that will help you keep up to date. Perhaps nicest of all is the implementation of an Indigenous Feedback Forum, ensuring that an oft forgotten and more often ignored cross-section of inner-city Sydney will be involved in the process.
Now about those licensing laws...
