The eagle has landed, and it's wearing shiny pants. Last Friday, American Apparel opened its Sydney doors, unleashing layer upon layer of evocative cotton, lycra and hoodie.
American Apparel has built a reputation as the ultimate ‘no brand' brand. Quashing the traditional American logofied tee while subversively celebrating the traditional American trailer park.
People much older and wiser than myself assure me that Kings Cross goes through varying cycles of cleanliness/dirtiness every few years or so that brings different crowds with them each time. Ian Nessick (Scyrte and co-founder of Mooks) and Gareth Moody (Chronicles Of Never and co-founder of Ksubi) are obviously unfazed by the potential for the neighbourhood to change for better or worse and have set up shop, that's right shop, in the middle of the Cross.
In Melbourne, Alpha 60 (Alex and Georgie Cleary) are something of the fashion rat pack. Together with TV and Claude Maus they rule the southern city's cobbled lanes. With good reason.
Alpha 60's collections call on the spangled muse of film (and the occasional celebrity). This is first obvious by the store's name, Alphaville, taken from the 1965 classic by Jean-Luc Godard.
With Peter Pan apparently in full support of this pop-up shop it's possible there'll also be some kind youthful elixir on offer. However it's more likely that there'll be hordes of pre-loved designer wares on offer, apparently they have so much of it that the word on the street is that it's one of those super secret places where the vintage shops go to get their stock.
Martin Luther King had a dream. I had two: one involved wearing a g-string to my 2012 Oscar acceptance speech, the other; a cute-as-pie boutique/coffee shop (that spins old vinyl, bakes homemade muffins and makes the best coffee in Bondi) opening barefoot distance from my office/apartment/crack den.
It seems there's a sub-cultural shift happening in Sydney at the moment. That statement is based on nothing more than the fact that our favourite Crown Street vintage store Cream on Crown has spawned itself a sibling on the other side of town.
Borrowing the same snappy alliteration as its predecessor Cream on King has joined the ranks of all the other vintage stores in Newtown to quite some effect apparently.
Question. What do you do when you have found the world's greatest shop?
a) Go there as often as possible
b) When people ask "where did you get that AMAZING jacket?" Say it was your grandmother's?
c) Share the news so that everyone can enjoy its wonders and hopefully credit you for the find?
d) All of the above?
I am hoping that you will appreciate my generosity as I share my (once) best-kept secret.
