When you're four years old, dressing up as a super hero is a rite of passage. But instead of ‘Supergirl', ‘Batgirl' or a sai-weilding ‘Rafael', I was donned ‘Dutch Girl'. The outfit was hideous: little frilly apron, weird cone hat and clogs. My parents were ecstatic. I had clog-related nightmares for the next 10 years.

This fear endured until two weeks ago, when a pair of Funkis changed everything. There are many differences between the Funkis and the traditional ‘klompen' (Dutch for ‘painful torture of the foot'). For one, Funkis are Swedish and the Swedish seem to prefer their clogs splinter-free. They also come open-toed and robber-soled in red, yellow and patent black. Ditch the frilly apron for wide-leg jeans and you (and I) can sleep easy.
