SHOP is your guide to boutique fashion and retail in Sydney, featuring pop-up shops and other places that are so hard to find that Google doesn't even know about them yet. SHOP attempts to open your minds, hearts and wallets to the plethora of things that you can probably live without but in actuality don't want to. Clothes, jewellery, books, bikes, bags, shoes, bags that look like shoes - SHOP gives new meaning to the superficial - wait, we're confused.
Remember when learning new things was fun?
The people at Terrific Scientific surely do. And the moment you walk into their shop in Annandale, you'll remember as well.
Since 1994 Terrific Scientific has been selling old-school toy classics alongside recent additions that are aimed at teaching your kid a thing or two while having fun.
Walking into Remo General Store is kind of like ducking into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Yet here, Wonka Bars have been replaced with banana guards, creams, cutlery and other bizarre bits all compiled by a friendly and excitable fellow called Remo.
Remo opened his General Store in 1988. Since then, it has dabbled in Darlinghurst, Bondi, the World Wide Web and most recently, back to Bondi (full story available here).
"You don't stop playing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop playing" - is something your Grandma might say. You might listen to her, or you might think she's crazy.
In Japan, there seems to be a national commitment to outplaying the ageing process; a commitment that is reflected on the Sydney shelves of Via Alley.
Impressions of a Tool-Shed-virgin
Tuesday February 10, 3.08pm
Post a cunning entry off Oxford Street, The Tool Shed immediately reduces one to metaphorical nakedness. A thousand eyes and exposed orifices peer from every surface. Momentarily, you are enveloped - in a nefarious eden. Father grey beard is behind the counter to your right, analysing your every inch.
It might seem a little arrogant for a store to proclaim itself as "probably the world's best antique toy shop" but in this case we can let them off. First of all they said "probably", which suggests more than a little humility. Secondly, they're probably right. Their range of beautiful vintage trains is a sight to behold and the pre-loved accessories are so meticulously detailed that they could serve as decorative pieces in their own right.
It feels contradictory to feature this shop. Its innocuously placed signs require, at the very least, a second glance to figure out where they point; while the basement locale almost suggests the store doesn't want to be found. But once down the stairs and through the door your persistence is rewarded with chess.
Hello I'm a Mac. I've just launched in Sydney, thereby determining your city as part of the world's greater cultural agenda. Like my brothers in Fifth Avenue and Ginza I'm sleek, shiny and crafted from a translucent glass cube.
Which MacBook are you? Find out on my first floor. Or perhaps you need an i-something from level two.
