If, like me, you still wander down York Street hoping that Waterfront Records will suddenly reappear like Brigadoon, you need to look over at the sunny side of the street. Just down the block, Mojo Music is tucked away at basement level. Frank, who co-ran Waterfront (and helped me make my musical choices in the ‘90s) is still keeping things aside and pointing me in the right direction with claims such as "if this doesn't blow your mind you can bring it back". (He was referring to Kak's self-titled album from '69. It blew my mind. I kept it.)
Specialising in flower-powered psychbeat, mod, soul, jazz, cajun-zydeco, folk etc etc - Mojo is a goldmine of re-issues and rarities for those whose spiritual patterns are paisley, plaid or phantasmagoric. Stocking vinyl (old and new) CDs, DVDs and a few hand-picked magazines, it's impossible to leave empty handed, and certainly not empty-headed. Pick up a copy of UGLY THINGS or GALACTIC ZOO DOSSIER zines at the counter before climbing the stairs back up to sunlight booming and zooming. And conveniently, if you're suddenly overcome with the need to embroider a vest or rustle up a feathered headpiece, Tapestry Craft is just a few shops down.
