SHOP is your guide to boutique fashion and retail in Sydney, featuring pop-up shops and other places that are so hard to find that Google doesn't even know about them yet. SHOP attempts to open your minds, hearts and wallets to the plethora of things that you can probably live without but in actuality don't want to. Clothes, jewellery, books, bikes, bags, shoes, bags that look like shoes - SHOP gives new meaning to the superficial - wait, we're confused.
Audiophiles, aesthetes and People Who Like To Play With Knobs, unite! Come together and descend upon Classic HiFi, your new haven for listening/looking/touching.
Newtown's latest niche offering is brimming with the crème de la crème of 70s and 80s high end stereo equipment. It looks good, sounds incredible, and when you twist the knobs and press the buttons they feel weighty and real, almost like you're controlling a space ship (no prizes for guessing which of the three categories I fall into).
Sick of setting your alarm for 3am on a Thursday morning, just to be outbid by some 'I'm in a more convenient time zone than you' jerk on eBay? Us too! So, with a bit of research/luck we've found the best online record dealer this side of the Equator. Meet Craig Mitchell, he's the man behind Modern World Records.
Easily our favourite record store in Sydney, Lawson's lays claim to a great collection of used CDs, DVDs and vinyl. They also carry stacks of original pressings and obscure compilations. Every time we get something there it feels like we've discovered a fragment of history that must now be passed on to us.
I'm not saying capitalism is evil. But I'd much rather shop at a store built with passion than one that's squarely aimed at making a quick buck.
Welcome to Repressed Records, where the staff enthusiastically hand-write reviews of beloved albums (on CD and vinyl), and the store is chockers with DIY zines, 7"s, books, used mags, cult DVDs, band t-shirts, and a very cool mix of punk, indie, soul, black metal, garage, psych, and "whatever is hard to find yet devastatingly brilliant".
What are you looking for in a record store?
Funny albums hanging on the walls? Check.
An elaborate display of the monochromatic Smiths 7" and LP covers? Yes.
Wacky rock 'n' roll memorabilia like Kiss dolls? Got it.
Cool band T-shirts declaring your undying love for The Modern Lovers, The Byrds, or The Replacements? Affirmative.
It's a strange paradox when your nan has a better mobile than you do. While she surfs the net downloading tunes to her iPod - she is a true ‘silver surfer' - you rummage through her garage looking for old vinyl.
Old makes way for new right? And ironically, older items become more coveted with that exchange.
Down the South end of King Street is friendly Justin and the shop he co-runs - Bravery Repetition and Noise. The store is named after what we thought was the best Brian Jonestown record (until we bought the new one last week. Frankly, we are stunned at how much we love it and might have to re-think the rating).
