In Melbourne, Alpha 60 (Alex and Georgie Cleary) are something of the fashion rat pack. Together with TV and Claude Maus they rule the southern city's cobbled lanes. With good reason.
Alpha 60's collections call on the spangled muse of film (and the occasional celebrity). This is first obvious by the store's name, Alphaville, taken from the 1965 classic by Jean-Luc Godard. Jean-Luc himself is a recurring player, to be seen on T-shirts and the walls of the Melbourne stores. Kate Moss has also made an appearance, on a slinky full-length dress in Summer 07.
The lady d'jour however, is Laura Palmer (you might remember her from such series as TWIN PEAKS). Laura comes on a tote with every purchase from the new Sydney store. In general, the label is known for working wonders with volume, and their oversized tees have carried tributes to everything from triangles to cats (perhaps a nod to the designers' one time job at a Canberra cat shelter).
Until now, we've been able to glean snippets of Alpha 60 in Sydney. It's time to take in the whole piece. Welcome to Alphaville opened last week on Oxford Street opposite another Melbourne import Assin. The Sydney incarnation boasts a clean interior, a full collection, the infamous ‘White Shoes' and a young River Phoenix smokin' the walls.
