Dave Letterman got the flu again and I had to fill in for him... again. I tell him every winter, 'Echinacea, Dave, Echi-fucking-nacea.' And every year he nods all enthusiastic and says 'Yeah, you're right, I'll check that stuff out fer sure.' Then the second week of December I get a call from Paul (Shaffer). 'Dave's sick, man, he's really down for the count. Can you just do Monday and Tuesday? C'mon, guy. We need you.' If anyone else asked I'd refuse, but I can't say no to Paul. He helped me kick heroin in '83.

So, reluctantly, I hosted Monday's show and it was sheer torture. I had to sit and listen to that vain trollop Jennifer Connolly prattle on about her latest movie, endlessly banter with Paul and the band, and then grip the edge of the desk to stop myself from strangling Mr Boring balls - Anderson Cooper. It was absolutely wretched and I wanted to die.

Fortunately the musical guest was a UK band called The Duke Spirit and they were absolutely fantastic. If you've not heard them - put your pants on and run down to the record store immediately, you will not be disappointed. They rule.
