The lungs of Joanna Newsom seem to be an acquired taste, like eggplant or anchovies. According to fans, her voice is 'delicate', while another (less doting) friend recently likened her sound to "a hamster, being rooted by another, bigger hamster".
Whatever your take, Newsom is still fascinating. A midget astride a massive harp, her melodies are riddled with folklore, fairytales and dreams. It is perhaps her “deranged” voice that keeps each track from falling into a whirlpool of too-cute. And her oddball lyrics have made her a pioneer of ‘New Weird America’.
It’s this combo that will elevate the lady alongside the Sydney Symphony Orchestra when she appears as part of the Sydney Festival 2008. Because if any lungs can commandeer a whole orchestra, it’s Newsom’s.
