I love pastizzi! Like little golden parcels of happiness they saved me on many occasions as a starving student and in the years after. After a two year absence, the original owners of the iconic Maltese Café on Crown Street in Surry Hills have emigrated to the south end of King Street as "The Pastizzi Café". Currently run by the 3rd generation, this family business was opened by Maltese immigrants Uncle Joe & Uncle Leili in 1942. There must be few in Sydney who don't have a sentimental memory of this landmark and its glorious wares. It's still family run and they are rapt about ‘their new hood, with the community feel reminding Leonardo (nephew of Joe & Leili) of growing up in the ‘80s neighbourhoods of Surry Hills and Waterloo.
Not sure if it's just the fashion but he reckons it's great to be back in a neighbourhood where all types of people and families with kids reside. My old favourite is the classic spinach & ricotta, but Leonardo has gee'd me up to try their new empanda flavour next time I'm in. I'll let you know!
Ambience: Indoor
