Penguin Plays Rough has nothing to do with a rotund, anthropoid rockhopper who overcomes his flightlessness with a bout of ninja. Rather, it is the mix-tape of live literary acoustics. Remember when poetry was ‘performed' at Six Gallery in San Fran? Kinda like that.
In February, they brought us Erotic Fan Fiction as part of the Imperial Panda Festival - during which voluptuous stories fed ears and Maltese C!#t Cakes (a byname for the simple pastissi) negotiated with tongues.
On the third Monday of every month, a small coterie sits on a lounge room floor in Newtown to listen. Here, there are no boundaries, no judges, just many ears and wine. Formats span spoken operas, erotic fiction, petite stories, plays and screenplay shock treatments. From slapstick to oration, expect excellently articulated theories and wordplay. It ain't the Hilton love, so don't expect nothin' fancy but it's cozy, warm and really quite epic.
Should you be a fiction writer, who writes 2000 word things that live a quiet life in the bottom draw, bring them and put your name on the wildcard list when you arrive. 15 minutes awaits.
