In 1988, Remo Giuffre opened a store in Darlinghurst. It was a place full of "useful and intelligent things".
He imported rarities from around the globe, treated his staff like family, and (long before Borders met Gloria) opened an in-store cafe. Remo's customers were a devoted group, a community who he considered ‘always right' and darn clever to boot. By 1993, most of his stock came from their suggestions. The community was the brand. But suddenly, in 1996, due to unforeseen circumstances, the brand crashed.
This could have been the end of the General Store dream, if not for Remo's pal Geoffrey Guillard, who, (and we love this quote) "had recently become very familiar with various internet technologies".
Geoff and Remo turned to web. They launched the first REMO General Store site in 2001 without any products, but as a gathering place for their customers. Customers ‘sponsored' other customers to join and from there they could chat and vote on merchandise ‘missed the most'. On March 1, 2002 Remo pressed the enter key in a Bondi Internet cafe, and, amidst a seas of unwashed backpackers, the official REMO General Store transaction site was born.
This is the store we have today. A place that still stocks "useful and intelligent things" like DUMBO FEATHER, the Eggstra Egg Boiler and Stripey Things. And best of all, it's a happy ending.
