It's a sad reality that, in an effort to appeal to the tourist dollar, The Rocks is one of the yuckest places in town. The warren of laneways and stairs, with its remnants of early settlement, is unique. In a perfect world, we'd have pokey little bars and edgy galleries in amongst these, rather than bad cafes and opal stores.

As always, there are exceptions, and Foundation Park is one such. A compact, multi-levelled space above the rooves of the Rocks, it possesses one of the better aesthetics of any public space in the city, a melange of references to its previous life as early colonial housing. What were once rooms now offer an alfresco fireplace, a dining setting or a reclining lounge, all with a view. Grab some brown-papered beer and enjoy a sunset.
