As the state of film and television goes from bad to worse, it seems our only hope is to wait for a crop of newbies to come and save our eyes and ears. We’ve included enough links, so that you’ll get the point even if you haven’t seen an independent film since Harrison Ford was doing his own stunts and Macaulay Culkin was still adorable.
Kino has been breaking ground here for a while. Already an international institution for the young hopefuls of amateur film, and originally starting in Canada, Kino has now started up a monthly ‘open mic’ film night for locals in Sydney. Apart from a few guidelines, and a catchphrase that would have Michael Moore in arms, Kino is a perfect night to kickback and watch some great underground film in the eastern suburbs. And to be serious, unless you're doing the cheap-pub-food rounds, where else on a Tuesday night can you whet your whistle and stock up on grub for $10? Genius.
