TEKKONKINKREET follows Black and White, two street orphans who love their city and are fighting to keep the Yakuza, theme park developers and aliens away from what is rightfully theirs: Treasure Town.
Opposites in world views, actions and names, Black and White look after each other and keep each other in check. Black is strategic and brooding and White is innocent and sinister.
TEKKONKINKREET explores the themes of cities, identity and relationship. The city, Treasure Town, is a vision of old Tokyo dilapidated, charming and warm. It looks like a Moebius or a Geof Darrow comic. Its retro-neon advertising and insane details form the contrasted backdrop of the characters' angular and simple style.
Overall, the look and feel of this Anime steps away from the traditional big-eyed Miyazaki look and feel. The film is one of the first Anime to be directed by an American - and it seems to work. Michael Arias has created something tight with genuinely engaging and awe-inspiring cinematic moments. This, aided by a score from British electronic musos Plaid, creates a nuanced, exciting and visually-rich cinematic experience.
