It's odd what can make us cry in the movies. The death of Bambi's mum left me unmoved. Yet I always cry - always! - in that scene in Dumbo where his mum's been falsely imprisoned for being a Mad Elephant and she rocks him in her trunk through the bars... excuse me, I need a tissue.
Anyway, Pixar's latest also made me cry. All his life, grumpy old widower Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) has longed for adventure. Now, to fulfil a promise to his wife Ellie, Carl transforms his house into a balloon-powered airship and sets off towards South America, the last known destination of his idol, dashing 1930s explorer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer). Inadvertently along for the ride is Russell (Jordan Nagai), an earnest young Wilderness Explorer determined to earn his Assisting The Elderly badge.
Up is incredibly perceptive about human relationships and the difference between dreams and ambitions. But also laugh-out-loud funny and packed with old-fashioned, Indiana Jones-style action. It's just rolled-gold storytelling, and the talking dogs Dug and Alpha (both voiced by Bob Peterson) totally steal the show. Don't miss it - especially in 3D.
